In one of his deeply enlightening and wisdom filled satsangs, Hazir Swaroop Sai Sadhram Saheb explained that we ourselves are the cause of our own suffering. If we ever look within and reflect honestly, we will realize how we fall into the very pits that we dig with our own hands.
Saijan explained this through a story as an example.
He said that once a king, on his birthday, decided that the first person he met after stepping out of his palace would be made truly satisfied and happy from the heart.
When the king stepped out of his palace, he saw a beggar standing there. The king called him and threw a copper coin towards him.
However, the beggar could not catch the coin, and it fell into a drain. The beggar began putting his hand into the drain, trying to find it.
Seeing this, the king called him back and gave him another copper coin.
The beggar happily accepted the coin and felt very pleased, but again he went back to the drain and started trying to retrieve the first coin.
The king asked him why he was still searching for the coin. The beggar replied that it was also a coin, and he wanted to obtain it as well.
The king thought the beggar was still not satisfied, so he called him again and this time gave him a silver coin. On seeing the silver coin, the beggar was overjoyed and began blessing the king. Yet once again, he returned to the drain and started searching for the fallen coin.
Seeing this, the king realized that the beggar was still not content.
Then the king called him once more and gave him a gold coin. On receiving the gold coin, the beggar was overwhelmed with happiness. He blessed the king profusely and even began to dance with joy. But after a moment, he again went back and started putting his hand into the drain.
Now the king felt deeply disappointed. He had thought that on his birthday he would make someone completely satisfied, but that had not happened. So he told the beggar not to put his hand into the drain again and to forget that copper coin, because he was now ready to give him half of his property. He only asked him to forget the first coin that had fallen into the drain.
But the beggar replied that even if the king gave him his entire wealth, he still wanted the coin that had fallen into the drain.
Hazir Swaroop Sai Sadhram Saheb explained that the condition of us human beings is very similar.
No matter how many joys and comforts God blesses us with, we remain entangled in small desires. We engage in wrong actions, and instead of being grateful for what we have, we ignore the happiness already given to us. Rather than experiencing the peace and comfort we have received, we keep suffering over some small, unfulfilled desire. Again and again, we fall into the same drain.
We invite sorrow ourselves and then keep blaming others.
He explained that we come into the refuge of God and our Satguru so that we may remain free from sorrow. Yet, despite having many true blessings, we continue to complain about desires that we never even needed to hold on to.
That is why we are never able to feel truly content.
So always be grateful of what you are blessed with.
